The only reason she had come out here was for Nicolae. He had been bugging her to see the horses, so she had finally given in when she’d had a free moment and stolen him away to see all of them. It had been a while since she’d been able to relax with him, especially since she was avoiding him with Ian. Asher shifted slightly, watching Nicolae run through the stables, examining everything and checking things out, as she used to do and still did, getting a feel for the place. She sighed slightly and shifted again, keeping her hyper-active son in sight, deciding to banish all thoughts of the gypsy from her mind.
It was easier said than done, but she firmly shut that door in her mind, closing it again until further notice. Her mind had once been likened to that of Hannibal Lecter’s mind, with many passages, doors, exhibits; memories and sensations she had separated. That was not to say she saw the world differently, no, she merely saw more than others did. She followed several trains of thought simultaneously and never seemed to lose one. It was the reason she could learn so many languages in such a short time; she had to or else she would get lost in her mind.
Nicolae was beginning to show the same traits she did, fluent in English, Italian, and Hawaiian and showing an affinity for learning French. She taught him a few words here and there, devoting her life completely to her son. It was a sad fact that Asher, who used to sleep with everyone had not had sex or really any contact with someone in five years, until the one student tried to seduce her. It was unfortunate, then, for him that Ian had interrupted, else she would have been into bed with him, and that was what threw her. She normally had much better self control.
That was another door that was quickly shut, the tiny Hawaiian frowning as she crossed her arms, as she moved to keep track of her son who was by her side in an instant, wanting to be picked up so he could see the horses. She smiled then, crouching down to pick him up and holding him up so he could see the horses. He was already getting big for his age, taller than most children and lanky, a clear indication of who the father was, if her rational mind had any doubts still. The eyes were exactly the same, along with the personality. It was too obvious, she thought as she looked into those green eyes of her son’s and laughed, rubbing her nose against his for a moment as he hugged her.
She picked him up in a smooth motion so he could meet a mare, a deep chestnut horse who was quite friendly and patient with Nicolae, letting him pat her and tug on her mane, not that she would feel. Asher calmly answered his excited questions, switching languages as he did, most of the conversations in English, flavored with a slight Hawaiian accent. Nicolae, however, picked up whatever accent of the language, their conversation sounding rather like music, if it were interspersed with a few laughs as Nicolae questioned everything with his favorite word “why?”.
Ash put him down, not really minding if anyone else was out here; she had no classes to teach since the day was over and she now had time to devote to her son. Grading and plans could wait, she decided, as she went to make this day about Nicolae. He was her life, her world, and the real reason she ever did anything anymore. She’d taken the job because it let her be around Nicolae as well as paid well, which she was grateful for, even if it was so far from Hawaii. She loved her island, but wanted to explore everywhere she could, so Alaska it was.
She laughed a bit, tapping Nico’s nose as he pat the horse again, wanting down so he could explore more, running everywhere and climbing on everything, curious as a child should be, while his mother looked on with a smile on her face, ignorant of the world around them for the moment.
