It spilled out through the cracks in the windows and doors, black, thick and suffocating. Like oil clawing it's way across the ocean to murder every creature unfortunate to be caught in it's path, waiting for the struggling to stop before consuming it. The analogy always struck her as strangely appropriate and beautiful; you can't escape what you can't fight.
The fire blazed, small but fierce, in the middle of the room while Elysia sat with a dreamy smile on her face an watched. Occasionally she would feed the licking flames bits of broken furniture to keep it going and watch as it roared higher and higher. In turn, the smoke grew thicker and blacker as the smell of burning fabric and laquer hung heavy in the air, threatening to asphyxiate any who were dumb enough to stand tall and bang on the doors keeping most of it in. Despite this, Elly wasn't dumb; four large windows, two on either side of her and her little fire, stood wide open so that the black could flood the open air and disperse.
She wanted to be able to sit as close as humanly possible to the fire without dying of smoke inhalation.
"Time's running out here, baby sister. You better hope they don't send your illiterate arse home after."
Ah, those had been the words that started this, hadn't they? Collin always knew JUST how to press her buttons. The very thought of going back to her homeland, being sent to that house where HE lived sent a shock of terror down her spine so sharp she nearly blacked out. She'd forgotten that her visa here would become void once she graduated.
And so, without any option and no one to make the terror go away, she's relapsed.
Elly had almost forgotten what a good house fire felt like; she never wanted to after this.
Still smiling that clouded over and glazed smile, the blonde began to hunt around for more things to burn, humming cheerfully. This was the only way to free herself from her nightmares she thought idlly; to disconnect herself once more and destroy everything in sight. Sure, she wasn't actually doing it for attention this time (like she usually did), but she highly doubted that anyone would care--even Kisa, who was her roommate and the closest thing to an actual friend she would ever get, wouldn't care. No one would care the way she wanted them to.
"And they never will."
It was with unprecedented strength that the Irish girl destroyed her next target, dragging the remains of the daise to the whing flames and imagined that they were arms reaching out to beg pitifully for the food only she could provide. She coughed faintly and dropped to her knees to avoid the smoke and tossed the wood in.
It didn't matter whether Elly lived or died, she decided; the freedom she had so naively envisioned herself living was a lie and she was bound hand and foot to the monsters that were her family--the monster that was her brother. Death was the only thing that could free her, but she was too cowardly to do even that much on her own.
She was doomed.
