* * * It was the first time the lake had been cleared for skating on recently and Ami was not about to miss an opportunity to be out on it. Especially since a light snow was falling, catching in her hair and on her clothing, making her seem almost iridescent in the late afternoon light.
She had been out there for an hour or two which gave her cheeks a color similar to the redness in her hair, which was shimmering with several colors ranging from a mocha brown to a bright, sunset red, though she was moving too much to be more than just a little cold. Not to mention she was bundled up nicely. She looked very Christmassy too with her red and white clothing theme and the poinsettia clip in her hair, it was one of her favorite times of year. All of the snow and sweets and decorating made her head spin. Oh how she loved to decorate for Christmas! But, as were most activities, it was always more fun in a group.
Every year she had always decorated with her parents. They were going to miss her this year, but she had decided that they mustn't know the truth as to why she couldn't come home. So instead she would just call them with an excuse of a big recital that she needed to practice for and send all of their gifts directly to their house, via the internet. All of her mail was to be forwarded to Ridgestone while she was gone, and she hoped that her sentence would be reduced so she could get back to her life quickly.
Also, Ami held tight onto the hope that Connor wouldn't find her here. Just thinking about him made her back threaten to seize up in memory of the attack. Which in turn made her almost fall since she overbalanced herself. Ami made a fairly smooth recovery though, allowing herself to just glide across the ice for the rest of the current song that was playing through the headphones in her ears. Even though nobody was watching her skate, at least not that she saw. Granted, she wasn't exactly looking for someone to be looking at her.
Ami had dressed in layers for coming out here today. She had a thick red sweater underneath her creamy white coat, and white leggings on over white, winter tights, with a red and green pleated skirt which came down to her knees. Her skates were also white and were designed like those of a figure skater.
As the next song started on her mp3 player, Ami closed her eyes, skating quicker until she was fast enough to start spinning in place, feeling weightless as she moved into quick, but simple leaps and turns with the beat of the music. She felt just like a little kid again, but even with all of the fun she was having, skating was always much more fun with a friend.

This place had an alien sort of beauty. If he had been in Alaska for any other reason, Ellis would have loved it. As it was, he had to make the best of this situation somehow, and at least Alaska allowed him to enjoy his favorite time of year. Things could have been worse; he could have been sent somewhere in Arizona or worse, Georgia. Anyplace too hot would have made him miserable- he far preferred the sharp chill of winter and the promise of water everywhere he looked.
The ground crunched satisfyingly under his feet as he headed towards the pond, his returned skates slung over his shoulder. Even though it wasn’t at all that late in the day, the shadows were already long and it was chillier than it had been before. All bundled up in his long sleeved shirts, a thick hoodie, and a zip-up jacket to boot, in addition to his several layers of pants, Ellis was cozy enough. A small smile lit up his face. He loved this season. Despite the chill in his gloved fingers and face, he was happy… For now. Being outside once again made the stress slide away, he didn’t have to be reminded of how badly he had fucked things up when the only things around were snow, frozen plants, and the occasional curious animal.
As he approached the ice, his gaze found the path of a fellow bundled-up figure spinning and dancing around out there. He stilled for a moment and watched the red-headed sprite as she did a graceful twirl, shaking his head slightly in admiration at her antics. He was a pretty decent skater himself, but was nothing like what she was. There was litheness to the way she moved that he knew he could never replicate, especially once he had all of his protective hockey gear on. He was skating practically naked today, all things considered. His eyes followed the girl for a while longer as he sat down to pull his battered and worn skates on, lacing them up tightly over the thick wool socks he wore. They were cold, but they felt right. Once he was sure they were snug enough, Ellis stood up and slid out onto the ice, keeping an eye out for bumps that could send him sprawling. While it was one thing to fall flat on his face when he was out alone, it was quite another to do so when someone else was watching.
He skated two hesitant circles around the pond, avoiding the girl so as not to interrupt her with his rusty skating. God, he had gotten bad… How long had it been? Two months? Three, maybe? He had been let off of the team once his sentence had been passed and hadn’t had the heart or time to get back into skating since then. But now the itch to get out on the ice and knock a puck around had seeped back into his blood, riding along with the chill of winter. He didn’t have the puck or a hockey stick today, the school wouldn’t let him outside alone with too many “improvised weapons”, the skates were bad enough. But maybe later on, once they knew he was dependable, they would let him have his other gear back. Maybe he could start a hockey club here. It would be nice, and he could dream.
As it was, he was idling his time away by skating in circles, alternately speeding up and slowing down, working on his quick stops and turns. He was sure he looked ridiculous, but he didn’t care. It just felt good to be moving fast again, just so long as he didn’t bump into the girl he’d been watching. She was a very pretty thing, and maybe if he had been a year or so younger, he would have asked her out. But no, not now. Now he was content to wave and smile cheerily at her from his side of the pond.
She really was very cute, especially with the little poinsettias in her hair. It was worth a shot to ask her name, he figured, though for the life of him he couldn’t figure out what would send someone as seemingly sweet as her to a place like this. He made his way over to her, just hovering out of collision range, and smiled a bit sheepishly. “Hiya… Just thought I’d ask who I’ve got the pleasure of meeting out here today… I’m Ellis. I didn’t think there were many other skaters here. Glad I was wrong.”

* * * Ami barely noticed the male that had come to join her until he was on the ice, skating past her immersed in his own routine. He couldn't be a figure skater like her. His skates were too battered and worn, and they didn't have the same lean wear that her's did. She stopped thinking about it though since it would throw off her concentration too much and she didn't want to wipe out now that she wasn't alone.
When he made his way over to her, she stopped with a small flourish, sending a spray of ice chips off to the side, just to show him what she could do, a light smile gracing her lips as she reached up and undid her headphones, wrapping them up in a hand and stuffing them into her coat pocket. He was cute. Very cute. She liked all the cute boys that wound up here. Yes, they were technically bad, but they had to have some good in them if they were sent here and not straight to prison, right?
"It's a pleasure to meet you Ellis. I'm Ami~" She gave a small spin in place, hair flaring out around her almost like a halo before she came to a stop in front of him again. "And of course I skate too, it's good cross training." There was a slight pause as she contemplated him, a finger tapping at her lower lip, green eyes intense and sparkling. "You're not a figure skater are you?" She asked after a fairly lengthy pause. He was nowhere near lithe looking enough to be a skater in her discipline, but she could be wrong. After all, she had been before.
Ami did not, however, share Ellis' love for the cold. She would be comfortable anywhere, and didn't really have a hot or cold preference, so long as there was something she could keep busy with. Like skating, or dancing, or boys..... she did like boys..... they made for good ideas for her book. Not a book as in the written sense, but the scrapbook she kept of her future plans. It was a little goofy, yes, but she didn't find it too odd. Some girls had way odder habits than she did after all.
"Skating is much more fun in pairs or groups. So skate with me!" She grabbed his hand suddenly and skated off, surprisingly forceful with her motions for someone so small. Dancers were very deceptive with their strength and weight. Nobody could ever guess her true weight, as she was much heavier than she looked.
Eventually she turned so she was facing him to make sure he was able to keep up, eventually reaching for his other hand and sending them in a series of oblongs, careful to keep them inside the perimeter of the lake. "Beautiful evening isn't it? Perfect for fun." She dissolved into giggles as she kept bringing him along with her, not noticing that he was rusty in the slightest. She knew she could come on strong, but most people found it endearing. At least at first. She hoped that he was one of them. She really did. He was sweet, if he kept this sweetness up they could be good friends.

With a little flourish, the girl came to a stop in a small spray of ice that Ellis couldn’t help but smile at. Even without knowing who she was, he was already beginning to identify her personality. Everything from the poinsettias in her hair to the way her eyes glittered was starting to tell him that she was a bubbly and very friendly girl. How she ended up here was beyond him, and he honestly didn’t really want to know.
The girl twirled again and sent her hair fluttering before she glided over to him, that pretty little smile still on her lips. Ellis blinked back a faint blush at her question, laughing a little and shaking his head. “No, I play hockey. Well, did. Not much anymore now that I’m here.” A little crooked grin brightened his face as he peered down at the girl, noticing their height difference for the first time. She was so slight, too, even bundled in the layers that warded off the Alaskan chill.
It was a surprise when she grabbed his hand and tugged him onward. He nearly lost his balance, not at all expecting the amount of force she packed into her pull. None too gracefully, he flailed until he got his center of balance back, then skated up to her and shook his head, laughing at the near fall. “Yeah… Yeah, it is fun to skate in pairs, I guess.” He snorted, glancing over at her as she pulled him along. The little lady reminded him of a sparkler, energetic and bright. She was a bit forward, but he had to admit that he kind of liked that about her. It was nice to have someone who seemed like they’d be a good friend. As she spoke, Ellis sped up a little more to match her pace, pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t taking him long to get his groove back, so to speak. The skating was coming easier. He grinned slightly at her words and nodded in agreement, eventually letting go of her hand yet keeping alongside her.
“I guess it is. It’s pretty damn cold out, though.” He shrugged and grinned at her, glancing up at the sky. “What kind stuff do you like to do for fun?” He glanced back at the redheaded girl questioningly, curious to see what she’d say.

* * * "Maybe you could get a team together? There are plenty of nice teachers here that would probably love to get a sport team together.... I could be your...... what do you call it?" She pondered a moment, trying to get the right word giving a hop when she figured it out, "Cheerleader! That's what it is. I could be your cheerleader." Not many people could tell that she wasn't American until she had one of those moments, or she started spouting off in French at someone.
She couldn't help a giggle at his almost fall from the tug into motion she had given him. At the same time however, Ami couldn't help the thought that falling with a cutie like him wouldn't be such a bad thing. But she stopped herself right there, as that was a bad track to get off on, because for all she knew, he had a loyal girlfriend waiting for him to come back home after a whole misunderstanding had taken place. Such was her life. But it didn't bother her, boys could make good friends and she enjoyed having more guy friends than girl ones, as they generally wore their emotions more straightforwardly than their female counterparts. They were also usually better at not stabbing you in the back or playing mind games when they were angry, but she could name a few males who had done that just as, if not more, adeptly than women.
"It's not that cold, after all, it is Alaska." She stated with a giggle, spinning some after he let go of her hand, to take in the wonder of the landscape with a flourishy gesture. "And I'm a dancer by trade, ballet is my specialty, though I know many many other kinds of dance. I also like cooking, and shopping, books, movies....." she stopped herself there, with another, almost giddy, laugh. "And so many more things, I think the list would be much shorter with my dislikes. But what about you, what kind of things do you do aside from playing hockey and escorting young girls around the pond?" A slight smile and a wink accompanied that last statement, playful, and ever so slightly teasing
Ami knew she was flirting, and as much as she tried she couldn't curb it. The flirting was just too deeply ingrained in her personality, the teasing niceness and all around fun to be around behaviors were so distinctly Ami that she couldn't change that if she had tried. She just hoped it wouldn't get her into too much trouble with the boys around here, last thing she wanted was to get cornered by some less than savory character.
